Module Overview:

Good spiritual leadership comes from having a healthy soul. We live, love, worship and lead from our souls. It is in the inner life of the soul where we meet most closely and directly with Jesus. “The Lord is my Shepherd…he restores my soul,” Psalm 23.
Taking care of our souls is of fundamental importance for the Christian leader. When we take care of our souls our life with the Lord, our life with friends, co-workers and others around us thrives. But when our souls are depleted or unhealthy everything in our life suffers. Proverbs 4.23 says, “Above all guard yourhearts, for it is the well-spring of life.” The heart is a central part of our soul, of who we are. Jesus says, “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Luke 6.45).

In this module, we will explore “soul-care” with a view helping you to stay soul-healthy and ward off the pitfalls of leadership that are caused by, or lead to an unhealthy soul. We will look at the relationship between soul, heart, mind, strength and will. We’ll explore how to make space for Jesus in our lives through “spiritual disciplines.” We will look at specific topics like “Leadership and Isolation.”

Module Content:

In this module we will consider:
• What is the soul?
• What is a healthy soul?
• What promotes soul health?
• The inner life is where we meet Jesus and the soul.
• What happens when we don’t take care of our souls and how it impacts our work in the Lord and the rest of our life.
• The importance of spiritual disciplines in pushing back busyness and making room for God in your life.
• Using the “Soul-Care Pyramid” to prioritize important relationships.
• Using a self-evaluation tool, spiritual audit and the “Wesley Questions”.
• Identifying temptations to prevent moral and spiritual failure due a “ruined” soul.”
• What the danger of isolation in leadership does to our soul and how to break that isolation.
• How I promote soul-care with people on my team.

Module Outcome:

As a result of completing this module you will:
• Be better prepared for spiritual leadership.
• Have a better understanding of what is the soul.
• Have an awareness of the dangers of not taking care of your soul and inner life.
• Have a better understanding of the importance of taking care of your soul as a Christian leader.
• Have tools and resources to make space for Jesus in your life as a part of soul-care.
• Consider ways to maintain healthy souls on your ministry team.

Paul and Becky are citizens of Switzerland and the USA. After working with YFC in Chicago they arrived in Geneva to work with international high school students (now called Youth Compass, a program of YFCI). They’ve had different evangelistic and discipling ministries in YFC but for the past five years they have been the coordinators of a team that provides pastoral care for National Directors in EMENA. Paul’s graduate and doctoral studies in theology, counseling and spiritual formation and their experience in YFC have given them tools to support NDs. They are excited to walk alongside YFC’s NDs knowing that leaders with healthy souls are better equipped to deal with the challenges and tasks of leading their ministries.
